Arturs Maskats
Composer

Every performance, every new work of art and creative expression is a leap into the unknown.

– Arturs Maskats

Arturs Maskats is one of the most famous Latvian composers. His work "Midnight in Riga" for violin, violoncello, vibraphone and strings, written for Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica, is frequently heard at our concerts around the world.

The recent collaboration between Arturs Maskats, Kremerata Baltica and the Swedish ensemble "O / Modernt" resulted in the wonderful piece "The Summer Dreams" for mezzo-soprano, violin, percussion and strings with lyrics by Emily Dickinson. The piece was premiered at the XVII Kremerata Baltica Festival in Jūrmala in 2020 with soloists Hugo Ticciati, Luciana Mancini and Andrei Pushkarev.

Our repertoire also includes Maskats' "Concerto grosso" for violin, cello and string orchestra No. 1 and "Salve Regina" for mezzo-soprano, cello and string orchestra.

You can listen to the world premiere recording of “The Summer Dreams” on Latvian Radio website (starts at 44:09)

"For all these years, I have associated Gidon Kremer and "the apple of his eye", Kremerata Baltica, with friendship, service to music and the pursuit of the creative spirit in the best sense of the word. They are like a family where true companionship, intelligence, and a particular understanding of the beauty and fragility of life prevail. I am deeply grateful to fate for the moments that I as a composer have had the pleasure of spending with this fantastically beautiful ensemble. Let the future years be creatively bright and sonorous, let your hearts and hands not tire!"
