The Grammy Award–winning chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica is considered one of Europe’s most distinguished international ensembles, with one of the cornerstones of its success being the choice of unique and imaginative programmes. The new concert programme offers an intriguing dialogue between different musical styles and eras.
The first part of the concert will feature Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins and String Orchestra in D minor, Felix Mendelssohn’s 10th Symphony—written by the talented composer at the age of just 14—and Mieczysław Weinberg’s Concertino for Cello, Op. 43. The second part will include Cadenza – Andante from Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks’s Second Cello Concerto “Presence” and Aria for String Orchestra by exiled Latvian composer Tālivaldis Ķeniņš. The concert will conclude with Finnish composer Olli Mustonen’s String Quartet.
All four soloists of the concert “New and Unexpected” are also members of Kremerata Baltica, and on this evening these outstanding instrumentalists will help reveal the depth and emotional message of each composition. Violinist Džeralds Bidva from Lithuania is the concertmaster of the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra and regularly performs both as a soloist with symphony and chamber orchestras and in various chamber ensembles. Stella Zaķe is a young and talented violinist from Riga who has received recognition for her versatility and mastery, regularly participating in various festivals and masterclasses. Magdalena Ceple has been the principal cellist of Kremerata Baltica since the 2021/22 season; she performs music of various genres and styles—from classical to jazz—and her latest passion is Baroque music. Young cellist Kristers Mārtiņš Šīmanis has been a member of Kremerata Baltica for six years and has also performed with the State Chamber Orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra.
